Job Description

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), in partnership with Durban University of Technology (DUT), is embarking on an initiative to build a new generation of academics. Phase 10 of the Staffing South Africa’s Universities Framework (SSAUF) is called the New Generation of Academics Programme and is aimed at attracting people with relevant qualifications and experience to pursue a Doctoral qualification while they are developing as proficient academics at the University. Successful candidates will engage in comprehensive support programs that include a salary, mentorship, equipment, cost of tuition fees, etc.

 Only South Africans who are 40 years or younger from the designated and underrepresented groups will be considered. The aggregate mark for their Masters' qualification must be 70% and above.

 The University is looking for Aspirant Academics in the following academic discipline.

 Minimum Requirements:

  • A Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Must be in the 3rd or 4th year of their PhD

 Additional Requirements:

  • 2 years post-graduate experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Above average Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Experience as a tutor, lecturer, teaching assistant, or involvement in academic support.
  • Emerging research trajectories such as publications, conference presentations, or an emerging research profile.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and academic writing skills.
  • Evidence of community engagement or involvement in professional/industry bodies.
  • Commitment to transformation, innovation, and advancing knowledge in their field.
  • Familiarity with higher education teaching methodologies and learning technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within academic teams and under mentorship.

 Summary of Duties

  • Competent preparation and delivery of learning material related to Mechanical Engineering and appropriate technologies to students at an undergraduate level using online platforms.
  • Development of learning material for Mechanical Engineering courses.
  • Supervise, educate, and assess undergraduate students.
  • Undertake assessment and administration duties related to teaching and learning.
  • Facilitate learning effectively through traditional and online methods. 
  • Undertake research and publications, and become involved in community engagement.
  • Working collegially with team members toward attaining the department, faculty, and university goals. 
  • Assist with administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department or Representative.

 Conditions of Employment

In accepting an NGAP appointment, the incumbent will have to:

  1. Commit to full participation in the 4-year New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP)
  2.  Please note that nGAP appointees who already hold a doctorate will be required to undertake a higher teaching/research workload. 
  3. Commit to work closely with the supervisor and mentor assigned to him/her and to adhere to the study plan and milestones developed with the supervisor.
  4. Commit to participating in the SSAU F Development Programme, which will involve participation in at least one short course/module per year focused on research or teaching development.
  5. Agree that s/he cannot accept any other funding from state sources that duplicates the purpose for which funding has already been allocated to him/her.
  6. Agree that s/he cannot accept any other funding for projects that conflict with obligations that arise from participating in the nGAP.
  7. Agree to inform the University and the Department of Higher Education and Training of any other funding that s/he has been offered before accepting such funding.
  8. Agree that should s/he leaves the nGAP position before completing the 6-year program, s/he will be obliged to reimburse the nGAP fund by repaying the University the following costs incurred up to the point of leaving.
    • Registration and tuition fees for postgraduate studies, where applicable. 
    • Costs are associated with the assignment of a mentor to support development. 
    • Costs incurred for his/her participation in the SSAUF Development Programme.
    • Costs of infrastructure and equipment provided to support his/her work in the nGAP.
    • Any conference/ international mobility costs are paid by the nGAP.
    • 10% of salary costs are paid by the nGAP up to the point of leaving. 
  1. Agree to participate in research, monitoring, and evaluation activities focused on the nGAP, including participating in an exit interview upon leaving or completing the studies.
